You don’t have to travel far and wide to get some quality family time into your week if you’re in Brisbane. Whether you’re a born and bred local or a visiting tourist, here are 5 awesome family activities in Brisbane to add to your weekend hit-list.
Test Science at the Sciencentre
The Sciencentre is a great place to head to if you want to have some fun indoors. Located at Southbank, the Sciencentre gives a great hands on experience to family members of all ages. Who doesn’t want to learn about science while playing with experiments?! Have a look at their permanent exhibitions or keep up to date with their seasonal displays that change on a regular basis!
Chow Down at Eat Street Markets
I am the first one to admit that at peak times, the Eat Street Markets get a little bit crazy, but the combination of food stalls and live entertainment go together to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere despite the crowds. My recommendation would be to hit up a number of food stalls, grab a bunch of dishes and then find a table to chow down on some delicious and fresh food with international flavours – there’s Mexican, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Turkish, Spanish, Japanese, American and of course, some good ol’ Australian tucker. The markets are open on Friday nights and Saturday day and night, so if you are looking for a weekend treat, this is the place to be!
Stroll the Roma Street Parklands
Living in Brisbane for just over 5 years, I’d never been to the Roma Street Parklands until only recently. Spread over 16 hectares, enjoy a couple hours or the whole day relaxing and exploring the extensive Parklands. Stroll the paths, view the water features and enjoy a picnic near the lake. An added bonus to the Roma Street Parklands is that everything is for free! Yep, a whole day for the family for FREE. Enjoy!
Catch A Movie At Southbank Cinemas
Located in Southbank, these cinemas are known for their super affordable prices so this makes it a great option for the money-savvy family who wants to all enjoy a flick at the movies. After a movie, you can relax along the waterfront, have a swim in the man-made beach if the weather is warm (it usually is in Brisbane) or dine at one of the precincts many restaurants and cafes (more info here).
Get The Adrenaline Racing At A Theme Park
Okay, so not technically in Brisbane… but the popular theme parks like Dreamworld and Movie World are only a short drive away as you head south towards the Gold Coast. You can’t really look past the theme parks for some quality family fun, and they will be sure to keep the whole family entertained for hour on end (even the big kids!). Be wary of the peak seasons though as the theme parks are some of the top tourist attractions in the region, so they tend to get crazy busy during the holiday period.
I admit, these activities aren’t solely just for families. In fact, I’ve done all of these things (Even the Sciencentre!) myself, so definitely don’t be shy if you find yourself exploring everything that Brisbane has to offer.
